Accessing a Directory With a Web Browser

Mapping a Network Drive

Mapping a network drive allows you to interact with your files more directly.

For OIT Student Home Directories:

  1. If you are not on the CECS network, connect to the VPN.
  2. Open “My Computer.”
  3. Click on Tools -> Map Network Drive from the menu bar.
  4. In the “Drive” drop-down box, choose the drive-letter you want to use for this particular directory.
  5. In the Folder text box, enter \\stuhome.psu.ds.pdx.edu\x\yourusername
    where “yourusername” is your OIT username and “x” in the first letter of your OIT username.  For example, user bob would enter \\stuhome\b\bob.
  6. Click on “Connecting using a different username.”
  7. Enter PSU\yourusername in the username box then enter your OIT password.
  8. Check “Reconnect At Login” to make it a ‘permanent’ connection .
  9. Click on the “Finish” button.

For OIT Faculty and Staff Home Directories:

  1. If you are not on the CECS network, connect to the VPN.
  2. Open “My Computer.”
  3. Click on Tools -> Map Network Drive from the menu bar.
  4. In the “Drive” drop-down box, choose the drive-letter you want to use for this particular directory.
  5. In the Folder text box, enter \\emphome.psu.ds.pdx.edu\x\yourusername
    where “yourusername” is your OIT username and “x” in the first letter of your OIT username.  For example, user bob would enter \\emphome\b\bob.
  6. Click on “Connecting using a different username.”
  7. Enter PSU\yourusername in the username box then enter your OIT password.
  8. Check “Reconnect At Login” to make it a ‘permanent’ connection .
  9. Click on the “Finish” button.

 

For Other Directories:

  1. First, you will need to find out where the directory you want to map is stored. You can do this by logging into your OIT account and double-clicking on “My Computer”.  Under the “Network Drives” heading, you will see several drive icons with entries next to them that look something like “name on server\folder\folder” or “name on server.stuff.pdx.edu”.  For the drive you want to map, write down the “server\folder” or “server.stuff.pdx.edu” information.  You may need to click on the drive then click on “Details” on the left side of the window to get the full entry.
  2. Log onto the computer from which you want to access your OIT directory. If you’re computer is not already on the CECS network, connect to the VPN.
  3. Open “My Computer.”
  4. Click on Tools -> Map Network Drive from the menu bar.
  5. In the “Drive” drop-down box, choose the drive-letter you want to use for this particular directory.
  6. In the Folder text box, enter the server information that you wrote down from your OIT account with “\\” in front of it.  For example, \\server\folder\folder or
    \\server.stuff.pdx.edu.
  7. Click on “Connecting using a different username.”
  8. Enter PSU\yourusername in the username box (using your OIT username in place of “yourusername”) then enter your OIT password.
  9. Check “Reconnect At Login” to make it a ‘permanent’ connection .
  10. Click on the “Finish” button.
