Account Types

General MCECS Account

Your MCECS Account is what is used to log into all of the computing resources and services offered by the Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science. It is distinct from your ODIN account, though they likely share the same username.

More information about your MCECS account can be found here for students, and here for faculty/staff.

If you have questions about your Odin Account, you can contact OIT.

Database Accounts

MCECS accounts do not have the ability to access our database servers by default. This means you will be unable to access our MySQL or PostgreSQL services until you come to the front desk with your ID and request database accounts be created for you.

Your MySQL or PostgreSQL username and the name of your database will both be the same as your MCECS username. Please exercise caution when using your password with database scripts, you should avoid it when possible and lock down the file when you can’t.

Service Accounts

Service accounts are created whenever a group or organization in MCECS needs a distinct MCECS account to manage services, own files, or interact with resources. A service account is not tied to any person, and its access credentials may change hands as members of the group or organization leave or join. At no point should a service account be used to store personal or private data. Groups just needing easily accessible group storage options should request a stash.

Any service account request is a special and unique process tailored to the specific needs of the group. To request a service account, please contact us.

Temporary Accounts

Temporary accounts may be created for events in MCECS not dealing with MCECS students. These accounts are very basic forms of MCECS accounts and are only used for a short while, usually not longer than two weeks at a time. After the event is completed, these accounts have all data cleaned off of them and are then destroyed. Temporary accounts can do anything a regular MCECS account can do, including printing and accessing lab computers, though they require a specific request for each service needed.

All temporary account requests are done on a per-event basis and do not happen automatically. To request a batch of temporary accounts for your event, please contact us.

Alumni Access

Due to security and software licensing concerns, we no longer offer full computer account access to MCECS alumni. If you are graduating and your MCECS account is expiring, you have two options.

Retain just your MCECS Email Address

Before your MCECS account expires, set your mail forwarding of your MCECS email address to the external mail account of your choice. Then notify the CAT of your desire to keep the mail address active on an alumni basis by sending an email to support@cat.pdx.edu. After your MCECS account expires, you will continue to receive email forwarded to your external email account. This option is useful for students who wish keep their email-based affiliation with the College.

We will periodically send confirmation emails to your forwarded address. If we do not receive an acknowledgement from you to our emails, we will eventually declare your MCECS account forwarding as abandoned and delete the email address and forwarding.

Retain Full MCECS Account Access (Sponsored Account)

Students with expiring MCECS accounts who need continued access to active MCECS resources (website/webpage maintenance, access to databases, software, etc) will need to request conversion of their regular student account to a sponsored account. A sponsor will need to be an active MCECS faculty or staff person. Have the sponsor contact the CAT to request the conversion and extension of the account.

The CAT works with sponsors to verify the accounts they sponsor annually.
