[Are you an MCECS computer or laptop user with an OIT managed load? Are you thinking of getting your laptop loaded by OIT to get a managed configuration? If so, read on….]

Since the CAT doesn’t have the resources to provide managed and supported laptop configurations, an increasing number MCECS users have been opting to get their PSU purchased laptops loaded and managed by OIT. This has been a useful option for laptop users who don’t feel comfortable self managing their systems (the Tier 3 route) or have strict security requirements.

However, OIT is feeling the pinch of supporting such a diverse array of hardware so they are instituting the following policies with regards to their computer loads and support.

If you purchase a laptop or desktop after September 1, 2019 and you want OIT to load it and support it (known as a managed OIT build):

1) NO-COST loads are only provided to hardware models from the PSU Hardware Standards List. You can find the links to the current PSU Hardware Standards Lists for computers (includes laptops), monitors, and printers on this page:

https://www.pdx.edu/technology/technology-purchase-consulting

2) Anything that is NOT on the PSU Hardware Standards List (purchased after September 1) will cost $150 per managed OIT install. This means that if something happens to the computer and you take it in to get it reloaded again, it will cost $150 for each time.

3) Attempts to provide a managed load on a computer that is not on the hardware standards list is essentially best-effort. If they are unsuccessful, they will return the computer and refund the fee.

4) The laptop selections available in the hardware standards list are specific Dell and Apple models. We understand that some of the configuration options can be changed but moving to a different model (that is not in the list) from these two vendors will make it a non-standard computer. They have chosen a diverse array of Dell laptop offerrings ranging from lightweight to workstation-class to  “tearables” which are touch-based, much like the Surface. Laptops/desktops from other vendors (such as Lenovo, Microsoft Surface, HP) are non-standard.

5) These policies apply to both desktops and laptops that you want to have managed by OIT.

The hardware standards are regularly updated to accommodate changes in offerings and support issues.
