IRC and Nicknames
Registering a Nickname
To register a nickname, you can issue the following command:
/msg NickServ REGISTER <password> <email>
This will register your currently used nickname for your use only. It is important that you use a valid email address when registering your nickname, as before you can identify to your nickname you must enter a validation code that will be sent to the email used for registration.
It is also very important that you do not use the same password for your nickname that you would use for your email. This is to protect you in case someone guesses your nickname password. If the passwords are different, the attacker does not have access to your email.
To complete the registration, you will receive an email at the email address used to register your nickname containing a code and some instructions. Follow the instructions to complete the registration of your nickname.
Identifying your Nickname
If your nickname is registered and you reconnect to the server, you will connect as “unidentified”. In order to continue using your nickname, you must identify to NickServ or your nickname will be forced to change to a Guest nickname. To identify, you can issue the following command:
/msg NickServ IDENTIFY <nick> <password>
Where <nick> is the nickname you wish to identify, and <password> is the password you used to register the nickname. So long as you specify the correct password, this will identify you to NickServ.
Recovering your Nickname
If you cannot /nick to your nickname because someone else is using it or NickServ says it is not available, you can issue the following command to unlock and recover your nickname:
/msg NickServ REGAIN <nickname> <password>
Where <nickname> is your nickname and <password> is the password you used to register your nickname.
Recovering your Nickname Password
In the event you forget the password to your nickname, you can issue the following command to reset your password:
/msg NickServ SENDPASS <nickname>
This will send an email to the email address used to register your nickname. Using the key that is sent to you in the email you will receive, you can issue the following command to set your new password:
/msg NickServ SETPASS <nickname> <key> <password>
Once this is done, you may start using the new password to identify your nickname.
Changing your Nickname Password
If you so desire to change the password for your nickname, you can set the new password by issuing the following command:
/msg NickServ SET PASSWORD <newpassword>
