Windows PPTP VPN Script Print
Written by thyme
Tuesday, 10 November 2015

Do not use this VPN service. It will be decommissioned on June 22, 2017.

For MCECS VPN services, please use our OpenVPN

 https://cat.pdx.edu/network/vpn-services-in-mcecs-2.html

For Windows 7 and newer, the PPTP VPN can be configured with an executable script. This is the preferred method for installing the PPTP VPN on Windows 10. Instead of manually adding the PPTP VPN, this script will set everything up for you.

Before we begin, there are 2 versions of this script. The first is a full tunnel. It will send all of your data through our network. If you don't have any special requirements about the VPN, or are unsure, run the full VPN script.

64 Bit OS

The second is a split tunnel. This configuration will only connect to our network to reach resources on our network. This means general web browsing, etc do not go through our network while connected to the VPN.

Option 1: Full tunnel download (64 Bit)

Option 2: Split tunnel download( 64 Bit)

32 Bit OS (Not compatible with 64 Bit OS)

The second is a split tunnel. This configuration will only connect to our network to reach resources on our network. This means general web browsing, etc do not go through our network while connected to the VPN.

Option 1: Full tunnel download (32 Bit)

Option 2: Split tunnel download (32 bit)

First Download one of the above and open it. The steps are identical regardless of your Windows version.

Once opened, Windows may warn you SmartScreen is preventing an unknown app from running. Check the "I understand the risk" box, and click the "Run anyway" option when it appears.

Next confirm you want to install the CECS VPN.

Then choose to install the configuration for your user only.

Finally a login window will appear. Fill in your username and password. The domain field can be left blank, it is already set to CECS by the script. Via the check boxes, you can also choose to save your password and connect automatically if you wish.

Note: If you are installing the split tunnel version a dialogue box will pop up the first time you connect. It will ask to allow the VPN to query the CAT network for routes. You can click the "Do not show this message" box and click continue.

Troubleshooting: Be sure to download the correct version (32 vs 64 Bit) to match the version of Windows you have installed. This is important for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Windows 10 defaults to a 64 Bit install.
