Under the current interpretation of the rules of the PSU site license for Microsoft Office, CAT can install office or can loan install media on any system that is considered PSU property. That obviously includes the PC or laptop that is purchased by PSU, as well as any system officially part of PSU inventory(leased or loaned to PSU with completed and filed paper work and covered under PSU inventory tracking and insurance).

The install media must be returned after the install.

Any system leased or loaned to PSU must have the site licensed MS Office removed at the termination of the loan/lease agreement.

For the purposes of this document it is assumed the system, PC or laptop is running a current MS Windows operating system unless indicated otherwise.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 Windows PCs - PSU Owned or leased/loaned to PSU

These are CAT supported and normally will have MS Office as part of the Default install

Tier 3 - PSU owned or leased/loaned to PSU

includes Wired desktops Laptops that are registered as Tier 3 host Macintosh Desktops and Laptops running OS X 10.5.x and above Laptops that are used Wirelessly or as Roaming exclusively.

CAT cannot install or loan MS Office media for the following:

Tier 3 - wired - Personal Equipment not officially loaned to PSU

Laptops - Personal Equipment not officially loaned to PSU

Systems not at PSU

Your options then for MS Office are as follows:

    1. Take the laptop to the OIT Helpdesk and have them install MS Office. This is effectively restricted to laptops. The Helpdesk isn't set up to handle any system that isn't a laptop. The Helpdesk can often do the install while you wait, please allow extra time for slower systems and updates. Please understand that sometimes they are busy and that it is really best to call ahead. Please contact the OIT HelpDesk at 5-4357 for details and questions.

    2. If you have a PSUID with a current sticker that says Faculty/Staff, then you can go to the IDSC front desk in SMC18 and purchase a MS Office License and obtain install media. At present, you can obtain one (1) license each for Office 2007, Office 2008(Mac), Office 2010, Office2011(Mac). Each license presently cost $10, personal purchase only. See "http://www.oit.pdx.edu/discounted_software" for more details Please note that quantities are limited and some versions may no longer be available.

    3. Purchase MS Office from other sources - your .edu email address and PSUID can open doors to many discounts. The link "http://www.oit.pdx.edu/discounted_software" covers some of the bases, an online search will also prove productive, and there's always the PSU Bookstore. Servers intended for multiple simultaneous users

Without getting into the tangle of technical legalese, the PSU MS Office site License can only be legally used on a PC as it is considered a single client. The same applies to the license you can purchase from IDSC. Legally, you'd have to buy a separate, different license for each expected user on your server. You're probably better off going without or using something like Open Office from Open Office.org
