If you are a Solaris user, and you have been using the GNU utilities in /pkgs/gnu, you will be affected by the following.
We are moving to modern builds of GNU software from OpenCSW. The rather ancient builds in /pkgs/gnu are being deprecated. We encourage you to use "addpkg" to add the following package to your environment:
CSW GNU/FSF software utilities
This will prepend a new PATH which will give you access to the new GNU packages. After this is done, commands like "ls" will run "gls". (The corresponding command names with the "g-prefix" will also be available.)
However, if you are looking for the GNU versions' man pages, you will need to look them up with the "g-prefix". Such as:
man gls
We will be taking /pkgs/gnu out of complete circulation in one month (after we have resolved some final dependencies). If you use the GNU tools on Solaris, please make sure you have added the new package to your environment.

Dropbox, an online file repository/backup service, has been gaining in popularity. Its ease of setup and use for personal systems has resulted in rapid adoption among people trying to sync and transfer data between home desktops, laptops and other mobile devices.
We are seeing increased use of this service among faculty, staff and student users. While Dropbox is a hit at home, it has had a rocky road trying to adapt to corporate and centrally driven IT environments - both at a technical and policy level. MCECS users face many of these same challenges.

When we switched our mail servers to support the Maildir
mailbox format some years ago, we performed a code hack
to pine (the mail program) on Solaris to make it support
Maildir format mailboxes. This was to ease the
disruptions that pine users would have experienced with
that change.

There are new variants of older malware making the rounds recently. If you are using Windows, even on a Tier 1 CAT supported system where you are not a local admin, you can still be vulnerable. The old basic guidelines against email-borne nasties still apply.

At 6pm, on
a daily basis, any VNC session on nemo that has been running for longer than 12
hours will be terminated. A message will be sent to these sessions
before the termination. This is an effort to keep nemo usable for active users due to heavy loading.

PSU is constantly being barraged by prolonged spearphishing attacks. Phishing is where the attacker tries to trick you into giving out sensitive information. Spear phishing is where the e-mails are specifically tailored to a target audience. It relies on social engineering the victim to fall for the e-mail and give up some information the attacker wants. Don't be one of those victims.
